The Art of ordering your Wedding Cake

So, it’s time to order your wedding cake.  Some might say this is the most important cake of your life.  While, I’m not sure if that’s true, it’s definitely high on the list!

Here’s the piece of advice I have for you.  This is not only for ordering your wedding cake but for your entire wedding day:
It’s your day, no one else’s.

Order your wedding cake according to your specifications.  It is OK if the cake is not all white with white buttercream.  It’s OK if your favorite cake is chocolate, you will not have 50 years of bad luck!

Your wedding cake should be a reflection of your wedding day and you and your future husband’s personalities; whether it’s simple and elegant or quirky and humorous.  Many aspects can be brought into play such as color, a pattern on a dress, your invitation or china pattern, your favorite flowers or a favorite saying can be written on a cake.  Some brides really want to keep an elegant feel to their wedding cake but also want to bring a whimsical theme to their wedding also.  You can do this by ordering a groom’s cake or an additional “fun-themed” cake. That cake can be served along with the wedding cake or at the rehearsal dinner.

As far as a cake decorator’s style goes, we are all different and talented in our own ways.  The question is: ”Does our style work for you?”
Most every cake decorator has a portfolio for you to look over, but most of us welcome a picture that you may have found along the way while planning your wedding.  Keep in mind, just like the models in a magazine, the pictures of cakes in magazines have a bit of airbrushing done to them, too.  We will always do our best to replicate a picture but keep that in mind.

How much will my wedding cake cost?  I’m on a budget.

Just like all of your other vendors, we will do our best to work with what you have budgeted for your wedding cake.  I can tell you that cakes covered in rolled fondant will be more expensive than cakes iced in buttercream.   Some cost saving options might be a cupcake tower instead of a tiered wedding cake.  Or you could do a smaller version on your favorite wedding cake and have additional sheet cakes in the kitchen.  This option is not only cost effective but it will also help your wedding cake to be served faster.

My wedding is outside, will the cake be ok?

Well… it’s cake, let’s be realistic.  Again, we will do our best to secure your cake for the day, but there are bugs, heat, sun, and humidity outside.  These are not a cake’s friend.  You just have to play it smart, do your official cake cutting before you sit down to eat dinner.  That way, if it’s an awful day, the cake can be taken away.  If everything is ok, it can remain there through dinner.  Otherwise, the cake will sit out possibly another two hours.  That’s a long time in summer weather.  You just need to be realistic about it.

When should I order my wedding cake?

The general rule is to contact cake decorators six months in advance.  That’s not to say if you contact someone even a month out they might be able to swing it for you, but six months gives you enough time to be a little more picky. You’ll have more time to determine the style of your cake or decide between a few vendors.  Most cake decorators can do more than one cake in a day.  Your cake is extremely important to us, too.  The fact that you chose us to be part of such an important day in your life is an honor and we want to make it a wonderful memorable experience all the way around.

As I’ve stated before, make your cake your own, no one else’s.  We are here for you to make that wedding cake dream come true!
