Some Guidelines For Wedding Favor Selection
Written By Linda Weaver; Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery
The tradition of giving gifts to wedding guests is a very old one. It is believed that theses gifts, common amongst European aristocrats in the 1600’s, first consisted of delicate confections or sugared almonds. Today, gifts to wedding guests are commonly known as wedding favors and are a tradition shared in cultures around the world.
Wedding favors have become an integral part of wedding reception planning, especially in the United States and Canada. Wedding favors are diverse and may complement the theme or season of the event. Classic favors can range from the traditional sugared almonds or chocolates to candles and scented soaps. Popular gift choices today include CDs with the favorite music of the bride and groom, shot glasses filled with colored candy, or silver picture frames with a photo of the couple. Modern gift trends also favor gifts that can be personalized with the couples’ names, initials or wedding date.
One way to please your wedding guests is to make the wedding favors food-related. Regardless of what you chose, wedding favors should look like they are made especially for the occasion. The important thing to remember is you don’t have to spend a lot of money to leave your guests with a lasting impression. The following guidelines might help:
Be creative. Today, couples are using their creativity and presenting favors that are thoughtful and personal. When choosing a favor, be original and pick a favor that is meaningful to you and your family. Or if you have a wedding theme, favors could complement your theme.
If your budget allows, consider personalized favors. Personalized favors are extremely popular because it is a fun way to add your personal stamp to the wedding day. Whether you decide to give one favor per guest or one per couple, be sure to have extra wedding favors on hand. Some guests may want (and take) more than one or you may have unexpected last-minutes guests in attendance.
Think about presentation. Wedding favors can be just as much a part of the table decorations and overall theme of the reception as flowers, settings and linen. It is your way of saying thank you to each person attending your wedding, so the presentation as well as the gift itself should reflect your intentions. Thoughtfulness and creativity speak volumes.
Remember to give your wedding party separate gifts and don’t forget the children! Although children may sometimes be given the same wedding favor as adults, many couples have opted to give special favors that children particularly will enjoy. One idea would be to present a bag of the couple’s favorite candy in a clear cellophane bag with a personalized label that says “Life is Sweet” or something similar, or give personalized cookies that you know the children will enjoy.
Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to try and create or order wedding favors. If you are having the favors specially made, they will need to be ordered in advance to ensure that they arrive on time; and, if you are creating the favors yourself, you do not want to be stuck trying to throw something together a few days before the wedding.
